How to: Remove a pre-installed heatsink
A heatsink helps your SSD consistently perform at its best, but you may run into a situation where you need to replace the heatsink. This article will help you remove a pre-installed heatsink.
These instructions apply to the following SSDs:
- MP600
- MP600 CORE
- MP600 PRO
- MP600 PRO XT
Precautions
Before you remove a pre-installed heatsink, please keep the following in mind:
- The advertised speed of an SSD is achieved with the pre-installed heatsink. The SSD performance will suffer if used without a heatsink, and may differ with third-party cooling solutions.
- We do not reject returns with a removed heatsink unless the components are damaged, but ALL components must be returned under any circumstances (e.g. the SSD, thermal pad, heatsink, and heatsink clip).
- Standard warranty terms apply when making a return.
Removing the heatsink
You will need the following to remove the heatsink:
- The SSD
- A plastic pry tool
- A clean work area
To remove the heatsink:
- Insert the plastic pry tool between one of the heatsink clips and the heatsink itself.
- Lightly pry outward until the retaining clip disengages from the lower lip of the heatsink.
- Repeat steps 1-2 for the other clip on the same side of the drive.
- Hold onto the ends of the SSD and firmly grip the heatsink.
- Begin pulling the heatsink away from the drive and heatsink clip, slightly rotating the unclipped side upward.
- NOTE: The thermal pad may cause some resistance, so make sure to pull the heatsink away with consistent force while making sure to securely hold the SSD.
